Get paid to learn, see the world, and meet
interesting people. What’s stopping you?
There are many programs, many tailored specifically
for students of color, that you can take advantage of. From summer medical
enrichment programs, year-long policy internships to Spanish immersion
trips, the possibilities are endless. Let your interests light your path.
So why do them? Participating in programs is a great opportunity to show
initiative, prove your academic interests, and increase you knowledge
base. It is also a great way to meet other premeds of color. Trust me,
you are not alone. Also, participating in programs at schools that you
want to apply to can help you get your foot in the door. I can keep on
trying to convince you, but I’ll give you the hard facts about one
great program. 63% of students who participated in the Summer
Medical and Dental Education Program (program sponsored by the AAMC
targeting underrepresented minorities in medicine) and who applied to
medical school were accepted.
The only thing stopping you now is not looking and applying to programs.
They want students of color like you. Below are program search engines
to get you started and a few links to great programs to take advantage
of.
Must Know Tips!
-Programs you take advantage
of do not have to be science based! What are your interests?
-At every school there
is an office or website (Office of Diversity or advising) that compiles
available program opportunities. Ask around and you will find it in no
time.
-Every medical
school and undergraduate institution has programs (medical enrichment,
science, or MCAT prep programs) for students of color. Go the office of
diversity near you for more information.
