Apply to Medical School

Now that you have the MCAT out of the way it’s time to apply to medical school.

Below are some tips on how to apply to medical school.

Are you not happy with your scores? Are you not ready to apply or don’t think you can get in with your scores? Check out the Other Options link.

How do I apply to medical school?

Medical school applicants apply using the AMCAS application. Most medical schools in the US and Canada (~116 total) use this application.

Check out all the schools that use the AMCAS application and see if there are schools you want to apply to that are not on the list. You can usually get non-AMCAS participating school applications from their school website.

What materials do you need to collect and what to you need to apply to medical school?

  • Personal information (Social Security number)
  • List of awards and scholarships
  • List of extracurricular activities
  • Personal Statement
  • Official transcripts
  • 2-3 Letter of recommendations
  • Personal Statement

How should I pick the medical school and how many I should apply to?

You should only pick schools that you could see yourself going to. Don’t pick a medical school in Minnesota just because you think you will get in. It will be the longest four years of your life if you hate cold weather and have no family in the area. Pick schools based on where you think you get the best medical training, where you will be happy, and schools that you have a chance to get into.

If other factors are important to you make them a deciding factor. For example, if diversity is important to you then look at schools that have high percentages of minority students. Or, if you are Californian and can’t see yourself leaving, you should apply to a large number of California schools. Follow your heart. But at the same time don't limit yourself.

Below are a few other school characteristics that you can look at to make your decision.

  • How much does it cost a year?
  • Do they have grades? A school with no grades is seen by most students as the way to go. You worry about learning and not competing.
  • How big is their entering class?
  • Do they have a diverse class?

  • Choosing School Tips!
    -
Most students apply to 10-25 schools.
-Apply to 2-4 dream schools and a 2-4 schools that your grades and MCAT’s have been shown to be adequate to get in.
